/ DESIGN RESEARCH
During my postgraduate at the Royal College of Art in London I studied the concept of ‘digital material’, a research area pioneered by the Centre for Bits and Atoms at MIT. Within digital fabrication, it explores the potential of material itself becoming ‘digitised’; made up out of distint particles that can be digitally assembled, and disassembled. This concept and the theoretical background provided by the lab inspired my dissertation on the topic; When Digital Gets Physical, 2017.
Citypixels.cc is a project in which I took this dissertation into practice, exploring a scenario in which the law’s of ‘digital building’ would be applied to our built environment, looking at the consequences it would have to material circulation and the economics of real estate. The Octet Chair was one of the physical artefacts to come out of this design research; it’s been exhibited at Dutch Design Week and International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.
