2020 | When collaborating with Olivier de Gruijter and Camillo Fiorito, the owners of restaurant De Italiaan approached us to create a pergola for their terrace. They had been granted temporary permission to extend their terrace over two extra parking spots during covid and were looking for a non-intrusive way to create shelter and atmosphere on this new part of the terrace.
We designed and built this transparent pergola for them using only rebar mesh and tension cables, allowing climbing plants to gradually cover the roof over time. It's been used at De Italiaan for over a year until eventually the municipality decided to revoke the permit. Despite protest and signatures from > 1000 inhabitans, it had to be removed... Eventually it found a permanent home @ Wijntuin Ronja in Beverwijk.
