/ SPECULATIVE DESIGN
2018 | During my postgraduate at the Royal College of Art in London I studied the concept of ‘digital material’, a research area pioneered by the Centre for Bits and Atoms at MIT. Within the field of digital fabrication, it explores the potential of material itself becoming ‘digitised’; made up out of distint particles that can be digitally assembled, and disassembled. This concept and the theoretical background provided by the lab inspired my dissertation on the topic; When Digital Gets Physical, 2017.
Further on, I took this dissertation into practice, exploring future scenario's in which the laws of ‘digital building’ would be applied to our built environment, through a conceptual material leasing ecosystem called SCAFFOLDx; looking into consequences on material circulation and the economics of real estate.
The OCTET Chair was the first physical artefact to come out of this exploration; it’s been part of various exhibitions in 2019, including Dutch Design Week and International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.
